To me, this photo taken at the Noma center in Niamey, is both a heartbreaking and sweet photo. Heartbreaking because it reminds us that too many children suffer from diseases that should have already been eradicated many years ago. Sweet, because Doubara is not “strange” or “weird” among other children also disfigured by Noma.
From what I hear, he’s been enjoying playing with his new friends, and has been welcomed with great kindness and care at the Noma Center.
Today, he received his first operation in reconstructive surgery, and we are awaiting news with great anticipation. He will need at least one other operation to repair a fractured jaw caused by complications from Noma. We will keep you posted!
